Flipboard Buys Ellerdale, Launches iPad App With New Funding
Palo Alto-based Flipboard, a new startup founded by Mike McCue, former CEO of Tellme, and Evan Doll, former senior iPhone engineer at Apple, said today that it has raised $10.5M in a funding round, from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Index Ventures, Twitter's Jack Dorsey, Facebook's Dustin Moskovitz, plus Peter Chernin, Ron Conway, Alfred Lin, Peter Currie, Quincy Smith, and Ashton Kutcher. The firm said it is creating a "social magazine" application for the Apple iPad which brings to life the stories, photos, news and updates being shared across Twitter and Facebook. As part of the funding and launch, the firm said it has acquired Ellerdale, a provider of advanced semantic analysis tools used to find trending content from social networks. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed, however, the firm said Artur van Hoff, the firm's founder, will become Chief Technology Officer of the company.
