Santa Clara-based Symyx Technologies, said today that it is in a definitive agreement to acquire MDL Information Systems, a unit of Elsevier, for $123M in cash. The firm said the deal, which includes certain content and software products of MDL, will provide it with software essential to critical R&D activities in the life sciences, chemicals and energy industries. Symyx is a provider of electronic lab notebook, automation, and scientific decision support software; MDL, which is based in San Ramon, provides R&D software for life sciences companies. The deal is expected to close in Q4 2007. Symyx was advised by Thomas Weisel Partners in the deal.
