Hortonworks, a new company focused on Apache Hadoop, has spun out of
Yahoo, with the backing of Benchmark Capital, Yahoo and Benchmark said Tuesday afternoon. Yahoo and Benchmark said Hortonworks will focus on making it easier to install, manage, and use Apache Hadoop. Hadoop is used by companies to manage serers used for data analysis and cloud computing. The new firm will be headed by Eric Baldeschwieler, formerly VP of software engineering for Yahoo's Hadoop team. Size of the funding by Benchmark was not announced.
