Google Whacks 4,000 At Motorola Mobility
Mountain View-based Google has cut 4,000 employees out of its new Motorola Mobility unit, out of around 20,000 employees, the company said today via a regulatory filing. Two thirds of those cuts were outside the U.S. Google said the cuts come along with plans to close or consolidate about one-third of 90 facilities owned by Motorola. The cuts--which were not unexpected after Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility--are expected to return Motorola's mobile devices unit to profitability, Google said in the statement announcing the moves.
