    UniversityNow Takes $17M To Overhaul College Education
    San Francisco-based UniversityNow has just raised $17M in a Series B investment, to help its efforts to overhaul the college education and degree system. The startup, led by Gene Wade, is trying to launch a web-based, affordable, charter university. The round was led by University Ventures Fund and Bertelsmann AG, along with Kapor Capital, Novak Biddle Venture Partners and Greylock Partners.     CloudOn Raises $16M For Mobile Office Software
    Palo Alto-based CloudOn said today that it has raised $16M in a Series B funding round. The round was led by Social+Capital Partnership, and also included Translink Capital, Foundation Capital, and Remembrandt Venture Partners. CloudOn develops software which allows mobile, iPad tablet users access their Microsoft Office and other enterprise documents in the cloud.

    Swipp Lands $3.5M
    Palo Alto-based Swipp, a stealth mode firm which says it wants to challenge the "social media status quo", said it has raised $3.5M in an institutional round. Funding came from Old Willow Partners. The firm, headed by Don Thorson, says it is developing a platform at the "intersection of social media, personal data, and commerce". Rich Heise of Old Willow joins the company's board as part of the funding.

    Larry Ellison's Latest Acquisition: The Hawaiian Island of Lanai
    What's Larry Ellison's latest acquisition? Apparently, the entire island of Lanai, Hawaii. Ellison, the founder of Oracle, is buying 98 percent of Lanai for a rumored $500M to $600M, from billionaire David Murdock.
