San Carlos-based Tesla Motors announced Thursday afternoon that it will build a new, mainstream family sedan called the Model S. According to the electric car maker, the new Model S will have a range of 300 miles per charge. The firm said it expects to start production of the sedan in late 2011. The firm said it anticipates the base price of the car to be $49,900, and include features such as the ability to recharge from any electrical outlet and easily swap out batteries.
