Sun Microsystems To Chop 6000 Employees
Santa Clara-based Sun Microsystems said this morning that it will cut anywhere from 5,000 to 6,000 employees, or approximately 15% to 18% of the company. According to Sun, the moves are designed to "align its cost model with the global economic climate." According to Sun, the layoffs will save it something between $700M to $800M annually. The maker of computer systems and software also said it would shuffle its Software organization into several new groups--Application Platform Software, Systems Platforms, and Cloud Computing & Developer Platforms--and specifically focus on open source software as a new strategy.
