Silicon Valley Gets More Of Venture Funding Pie

Silicon Valley is grabbing more of the venture capital funding pie, further cementing its lead in the nation, with $11.2 billion in 848 deals in 2008, the region's highest venture total since 2001. According to numbers from Dow Jones VentureSource, released over the weekend, Silicon Valley venture totals grew 4% for the year, up from $10.8 billion invested last year. The totals represented 44 percent of all venture deals for the year.

Silicon Valley's yearly venture totals rose, even though U.S. venture capital investments declined by 8% from 2007, to a total of $28.8 billion invested. However, for the quarter, Silicon Valley saw $1.9 billion invested, down from $3.08 billion invested in Q4 of last year.

In terms of sectors, Information Technology investments had the most investments for the year with $5.26 billion, followed by Healthcare, with nearly $2.6 billion in investments. Energy and Utilities was the third most active sector for the year in Silicon Valley, garnering $1.65 billion in investments.
