Intel Fined $1.45 Billion By EU
The European Commission said today that it will fine Intel $1.06 billion euros ($1.45B US) over what the commission called illegal practices. The commission said that Intel breached EU antitrust laws by giving hidden rebates to computer manufacturers who bought all, or almost all of its x86 CPUs from Intel, and by giving direct payments to major retailers to stock only computers with Intel x86 CPUs. According to Intel CEO Paul Otellini in a statement released by Intel, it takes a "strong exception" to the decision. The firm said it will appeal the ruling.
