Mountain View-based Google is eyeing instant translation of foreign language text using a smart phone, saying today that it has demonstrated a prototype of a product which allows users to take a picture of German text, and automatically recognize and translate that text into English. The firm said the technology--an extension of its Google Goggles project--is not yet ready for prime time, but is an example of potential future capability for the firm's Google Translate offering.
