Atmel Sells Smart Card Business
San Jose-based Atmel said today that it is in a definitive agreement to sell its Smart Card (SMS) business, based in Rousset, France and East Kilbridge, UK, to firm INSIDE Contactless S.A.. The deal is worth $37M in cash plus up to $21M in earnout. The deal was originally announced in May, but required the approval of the works council of Atmel Rousset in France. As part of the deal, Atmel said that INSIDE is in a multi-year supply agreement to buy wafers from a fab it recently sold to LFoundry GmbH.
