Mountain View-based Google said Tuesday that it has created a new strategic initiative that will focus on developing electricity from renewable energy sources. The firm's new initiative, known as RE C, will hire engineers and energy experts to conduct R&D in solar and thermal technology. According to Google, by 2008, it expects to "spend tens of millions" on R&D and related projects. Google said it will make strategic investments and grants in companies, including Pasadena-based eSolar and Alamdea-based Makani Power as part of the effort.
