VMware Targets Web Hosting Providers
Palo Alto-based VMware said Wednesday that it has rolled out a program targeted at web hosting providers who want to use the firm's virtual server technology to provide "rented" capacity. VMware, whose software is widely used by enterprises to create virtualized desktop and server PCs, said that its new VMware Service Provider Program includes a new per-virtual machine, per-month licensing model. The new program enables the ability to provide utility computing services to customers. VMware's offering will allow any hosting provider to provide services similar to Amazon.com's EC2 computing service.
