San Francisco-based Critical Path, a provider of email services, said Friday that it has sold certain assets of its SuperNews Usenet access business to Giganews. Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed. SuperNews provided Usenet newsgroup services. According to Critical Path, the software, commercial customers, trade names, and other goddwill will go to Giganews; it will also sell the consumer customer base of the unit to a new company, Supernews Inc. Usenet is the open discussion board system created in 1979 for facilitiating public conversations on the Internet. The system has fallen out of widespread use with the advent of web-based message boards and other discussion forums.
