National Semiconductor Slashes 330
Santa Clara-based National Semiconductor, a manufacturer of mixed signal and analog ICs, joined the Silicon Valley layoff train Thursday, saying it will cut 330 positions at the firm, as a result of an "uncertain business climate." The firm said it would make cuts primarily in non-manufacturing functions. National said it currently has approximately 7,000 people employed worldwide. The move came as the firm reduced its earning outlook due to what the firm described as a "weakened economy" and specifically, lower-than-expected shipments to wireless handset customers.
