Yahoo Rolls Own Hadoop Distro
Sunnyvale-based Yahoo reported Wednesday that the firm has released its own source code distribution of the open source, Hadoop cloud computing software. Hadoop, which is used for distributing massively parallel computing tasks, is managed under the Apache Software Foundation. According to Yahoo, the distribution is based on Yahoo's own use of the Hadoop software in its computing clusters; Hadoop's founder, Doug Cutting, joined Yahoo in 2006. Yahoo uses Hadoop for its search, mail, and other online services, running on what the firm says are more than 25,000 servers.
