Sunnyvale-based Yahoo said Monday that it has launched an effort focused on research and development of systems software for distributed computing. The firm said that it will provide a 4,0000 processor supercomputing data center for academic research, through its research group, Yahoo! Research. According to Yahoo, the effort is part of its participation in Hadoop, an open distributed computing project which is part of the Apache Software Foundation. Among the research organizations that will be using Yahoo's supercomputing resources will be Carnegie Mellon University and three groups at the firm's computer science school.
