, which develops SQL-compatible database aimed at the big data market, said today that it has raised $4M in a Series A round. The round came from
Mohr Davidow Ventures
. Splice Machine, which is headed by
Monte Zweben
, said its database helps overcome the issues with NoSQL and other "big data" databases, which require rewrites of apps and other issues due to limited SQL support. SQL is the language used to construct database queries and to retrieve information from traditional databases. Splice Machine says it is built on the open source, Hadoop stack.
