San Francisco-based RPX Corporation, which offers a defensive patent licensing service, announced today that the firm has raised a Series B round of funding. Amount of the funding was not disclosed. According to RPX, the funding was led by Index Ventures, and also includes prior investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Charles River Ventures. RPX operates a defense patent licensing service, where members contribute their patent rights and pay an annual fee to defend themselves from patent lawsuits from non-practicing entities--sometimes referred to as "patent trolls"--who are solely in the business of licensing patents and suing companies for license fees.
