Academia.edu Gets $11.1M For Research Portal
San Francisco-based Academia.edu has raised $11.1M in a funding round, to bolster its efforts to create an online portal for sharing academic research papers. The funding was led by Khosla Ventures, and also included Spark Capital and True Ventures. Vinod Khosla has joined the company's board as part of the funding. Academia.edu is applying many of the technologies made common by Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites (profiles, tracking trending topics, and more) to the academic world.
